Indigenous Seed Knowledge and Contemporary Crop Resilience

Abstract Crop resilience increasingly depends on maintaining sufficient genetic, ecological, and knowledge diversity to respond to drought, heat, salinity, flooding, emerging pests, shifting seasons, and other forms of environmental uncertainty. Indigenous seed knowledge represents a living body of place-based expertise concerning seed selection, varietal identity, storage, exchange, seasonal performance, culinary attributes, cultural significance, and adaptation to heterogeneous production environments. Contemporary crop science contributes complementary capabilities through controlled phenotyping, molecular characterization, stress screening, participatory varietal selection, decentralized breeding, and systematic seed-quality assessment. This conceptual–methodological paper develops an integrated framework for strengthening crop resilience without reducing Indigenous seed knowledge to genetic material or treating scientific characterization as a replacement for farmer and community authority. Research on crop diversity demonstrates that locally maintained diversity can contribute to agricultural adaptation, while investigations of indigenous rice germplasm have identified substantial variation in traits associated with stress tolerance.
The proposed framework connects five domains: landrace diversity, farmer-led seed selection, community seed circulation, participatory breeding, and complementary scientific characterization. Particular attention is given to knowledge governance because seed systems contain cultural, material, and informational dimensions that cannot be separated without risk of undermining the communities maintaining them. A scenario-based analysis illustrates the cumulative contribution that these domains could make to a Crop Resilience Alignment Index. Because no Indigenous community, seed collection, or field-trial dataset was supplied, all quantitative values are explicitly simulated. The study concludes that contemporary crop resilience can be strengthened when scientific breeding and conservation systems support rather than displace dynamic Indigenous and farmer-managed seed systems.
