Behavioral Adoption of Biological Crop Protection

Abstract Biological crop protection offers an important pathway for reducing excessive dependence on conventional synthetic pesticides while strengthening integrated pest management, ecological regulation, and agricultural sustainability. Its practical adoption, however, depends not only on technical effectiveness but also on farmers' perceptions of efficacy, speed of action, affordability, product availability, confidence in advisory sources, compatibility with existing production routines, risk tolerance, and opportunities to observe successful use. This conceptual–methodological study develops a behavioral framework for explaining farmer adoption of biological crop-protection practices, including microbial and botanical biopesticides, biological control agents, conservation of natural enemies, and selected integrated pest-management practices. The framework combines intrinsic behavioral factors—knowledge, attitudes, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of implementation, self-efficacy, and risk perceptions—with external conditions such as extension support, local supply, demonstration evidence, peer experience, and relative cost. Previous research shows that awareness of pesticide risks alone does not necessarily induce substitution when farmers remain uncertain about the effectiveness or availability of biological alternatives.
Smallholder evidence has specifically identified perceived efficacy, speed of action, price, product access, extension recommendations, and safety as important influences on biopesticide use. A scenario-based analysis is used to illustrate the relationship between perceived biological-control efficacy and adoption readiness. Because no original farmer dataset was supplied, all quantitative values are explicitly simulated and are not presented as empirical observations. The study concludes that adoption strategies should move beyond awareness campaigns and create low-risk opportunities for farmers to observe results, receive crop-specific advice, access reliable products, and integrate biological protection gradually into familiar pest-management routines.
