Women Farmers' Knowledge Networks and Adaptive Capacity

Abstract Women farmers frequently manage crop production, household food provision, seed selection, postharvest activities, livestock, natural resources, and other livelihood responsibilities while facing unequal access to formal extension, land, finance, technologies, climate information, and producer organizations. Under increasingly variable climatic conditions, adaptive capacity therefore depends not only on the availability of agricultural information but also on the networks through which women obtain, interpret, test, exchange, and apply knowledge. This study develops a methodological framework for examining women farmers' knowledge networks as an adaptive-capacity resource. Because authenticated social-network surveys, climate-service records, and farm-level adaptation data were not supplied, the quantitative component is explicitly simulation based. A synthetic population of 200 women farmers is modeled across four knowledge-network conditions ranging from fragmented information access to diversified networks combining peer relationships, women-led groups, extension bridges, climate information, and market or input connections. A Women Farmers' Adaptive Knowledge Network Index is developed from network diversity, trusted peer ties, bridging connections, knowledge reciprocity, climate-information accessibility, and decision influence.
A complementary Adaptive Capacity Score evaluates climate-information use, experimentation and practice learning, resource coordination, and decision confidence. Simulated results indicate a progressive increase in mean adaptive-capacity performance from 47.5 under fragmented access to 88.0 under diversified adaptive knowledge networks. The study emphasizes that network size alone does not guarantee adaptation. Dense peer networks can circulate trusted knowledge while remaining disconnected from improved seed, technical expertise, climate forecasts, credit, or institutional support. Effective knowledge systems therefore require both strong bonding relationships and bridging connections to external resources. The proposed framework positions women farmers not as passive recipients of extension advice but as knowledge producers, evaluators, and intermediaries whose adaptive capacity can be strengthened when informal and formal knowledge systems are intentionally connected.
