Climate-Resilient Kitchen Gardens and Household Nutrition Security

Abstract Climate variability can weaken household nutrition security by disrupting food production, increasing seasonal food shortages, reducing market accessibility, and raising the prices of nutrient-dense foods. Kitchen and homestead gardens provide a localized food-production strategy through which households can increase direct access to vegetables, fruits, legumes, herbs, roots, and other nutritionally relevant foods. Their contribution, however, depends on whether garden systems remain productive under heat, irregular rainfall, drought, water scarcity, flooding, and seasonal production gaps. This conceptual–methodological study develops a Climate-Resilient Kitchen Garden Framework that integrates crop diversity, locally adapted and climate-tolerant varieties, water harvesting, mulching, compost-based soil improvement, staggered planting, microclimate management, and nutrition-oriented crop selection. Existing evidence demonstrates that diversified home gardens can improve household food access and dietary diversity, although production diversity alone does not automatically produce improved nutrition and should be complemented by nutrition knowledge, market access, sanitation, and household decision-making conditions.
A scenario-based analytical model is used to illustrate how climate-resilient garden management may reduce seasonal fluctuations in the availability of nutrient-rich foods. Because no primary household dataset was supplied, all quantitative values are explicitly simulated and should not be interpreted as empirical findings. The study argues that climate-resilient kitchen gardens are most effective when designed around continuous household food availability rather than maximum short-term yield. The proposed framework positions the kitchen garden as a small but strategically important component of broader household nutrition resilience, particularly when climatic shocks or market disruptions constrain access to diverse foods.
