Digital Cooperative Finance for Small Producer Networks

| Abstract | Small producer networks frequently operate with limited working capital, irregular production income, weak transaction records, fragmented purchasing power, and restricted access to conventional financial institutions. Cooperative organization can partially address these disadvantages by aggregating demand, coordinating sales, pooling resources, and creating collective bargaining capacity. Digital financial infrastructure can extend this institutional role by improving transaction traceability, payment reconciliation, member-level records, collective savings administration, and the evidence available for financing decisions. This study develops a second-generation conceptual framework for digital cooperative finance, defined as a member-governed financial architecture integrating pooled savings, collective purchasing finance, buyer-linked receivables, digitally recorded member transactions, transparent working-capital allocation, and auditable repayment processes. Digitalization is treated as an institutional support mechanism rather than a substitute for cooperative ownership or regulated financial intermediation. Because verified producer-level data were not supplied, the analytical component uses a reproducible simulation involving 240 hypothetical small producers allocated across four financing architectures: Fragmented Individual Finance, Manual Cooperative Pool, Digital Ledger Cooperative, and Buyer-Linked Digital Cooperative Finance. Simulated fully met working-capital requests increase from 36.7% under fragmented finance to 45.0% in the manual cooperative model, 78.3% in the digital-ledger model, and 76.7% in the buyer-linked digital model. The final architecture records the lowest simulated unmet-request rate at 6.7%, the shortest mean financing delay at 6.1 days, a member-transparency score of 87.7, and an on-time repayment score of 85.0. These values are methodological demonstrations rather than empirical estimates. The study argues that the strongest cooperative-finance systems do not merely digitize money movement; they connect financial access with verifiable producer activity, accountable member governance, proportional data use, transparent credit rules, and production-linked repayment design. The framework offers a foundation for future longitudinal studies of agricultural, artisanal, fisheries, dairy, processing, and other small-producer networks. |
