Postpurchase Education and Product Longevity Behavior

Abstract Sustainable consumption depends not only on what consumers purchase but also on how products are maintained, repaired, and retained after acquisition. Manufacturers frequently concentrate sustainability communication at the point of sale, while comparatively less attention is given to postpurchase education that could help consumers preserve product functionality over time. The present study examines the relationship between postpurchase education and product longevity behavior through a simulation-based analytical framework. Four hypothetical support environments are compared: no structured postpurchase education, a one-time product-care guide, periodic maintenance education, and adaptive postpurchase support. A synthetic dataset of 480 observations, with 120 simulated cases in each condition, is used solely for methodological demonstration. Product longevity behavior serves as the principal outcome, while maintenance knowledge, repair confidence, and intention to retain the product are examined as associated constructs.
The simulated analysis indicates that mean longevity behavior increases from 2.59 under no structured education to 4.21 under adaptive postpurchase support. Maintenance knowledge and repair confidence display similarly positive patterns, while a separate continuous simulation indicates a strong positive association between engagement with postpurchase education and longevity behavior. The findings suggest that sustainability-oriented product use may be strengthened when educational support extends beyond initial onboarding and reaches consumers at relevant moments during ownership. However, education cannot compensate for products that are physically difficult to maintain or repair. Effective postpurchase strategies therefore require alignment among product design, service infrastructure, spare-part availability, understandable instructions, and timely communication. Because all numerical observations are synthetic, the results should be interpreted as testable expectations rather than empirical evidence from actual consumers.
