Sensory Minimalism and Perceived Quality in Digital Retail

| Abstract | Digital retailers increasingly employ visually restrained interfaces characterized by generous white space, limited color palettes, simplified typography, reduced promotional density, and carefully isolated product imagery. Although such sensory minimalism is frequently associated with contemporary premium branding, the relationship between visual simplicity and perceived product quality is unlikely to be uniformly positive. An interface that reduces irrelevant stimulation may facilitate cognitive processing and improve perceptions of professionalism, whereas excessive simplification may remove information consumers require to assess product credibility and value. This study develops and evaluates a simulation-based model of sensory minimalism in digital retail by comparing three interface conditions: visually dense, balanced minimalist, and extreme minimalist presentation. A synthetic analytical sample of 420 observations, equally distributed across the three conditions, was generated exclusively for methodological demonstration rather than presented as data collected from real consumers. Processing fluency, information sufficiency, brand trust, perceived quality, and purchase intention were modeled on seven-point response scales. The simulated results indicate that balanced minimalist presentation produces the strongest perceived quality evaluation, with a mean score of 6.05, compared with 4.92 for visually dense presentation and 5.36 for extreme minimalism. Although extreme minimalism generates the greatest processing fluency, its reduction in perceived information sufficiency prevents fluency from translating fully into superior quality judgments. The findings support a conditional account of sensory minimalism: digital quality perceptions appear strongest when visual restraint reduces unnecessary cognitive demand without eliminating diagnostic product information. The paper contributes a theoretically integrated framework connecting sensory marketing, processing fluency, online atmospherics, information diagnosticity, and quality signaling. It also provides practical implications for retailers seeking premium digital presentation without sacrificing informational credibility. |
