University Spin-Off Readiness in Multidisciplinary Research Teams

| Abstract | University research increasingly addresses technically and socially complex problems through multidisciplinary teams that combine scientific, engineering, clinical, computational, design, and management expertise. Such intellectual diversity can strengthen opportunity recognition and technological problem solving, yet it does not automatically create a venture capable of commercialization. Academic spin-off formation requires research teams to move from scientific achievement toward coordinated decisions concerning technology maturity, intellectual-property ownership, market need, entrepreneurial roles, resource mobilization, and institutional separation from the parent university. This study develops a University Spin-Off Readiness Framework for Multidisciplinary Research Teams (USR-MRT) that treats commercialization readiness as a multidimensional team capability rather than a consequence of research quality alone. The framework incorporates six dimensions: technology validation, market-problem validation, intellectual-property readiness, entrepreneurial capability, multidisciplinary team integration, and university commercialization support. Because no actual university commercialization, patent, licensing, venture-team, or spin-off dataset was supplied, a transparent simulation-based explanatory design was adopted. Five synthetic team-maturity conditions ranging from 20% to 100% were analyzed. The simulated University Spin-Off Readiness Index increases from 37 to 89 across these conditions. Simultaneously, validated customer-problem understanding rises from 30% to 86%, intellectual-property preparedness from 42% to 92%, role clarity from 35% to 91%, and investor-readiness assessment from 24% to 81%, while estimated commercialization-decision delay declines from 26 to 8 weeks. The analysis indicates that multidisciplinary diversity becomes commercially valuable only when teams possess mechanisms for integrating disciplinary knowledge, resolving ownership and leadership ambiguity, translating technology into a credible market proposition, and accessing institutional commercialization resources. The paper contributes to academic-entrepreneurship research by positioning spin-off readiness as a pre-formation capability that can be assessed before formal incorporation. All numerical findings are simulated and should be interpreted as theoretical scenario evidence rather than empirical estimates of actual university spin-offs. |
