Microfranchise Models for Inclusive Service Innovation

| Abstract | Inclusive service innovation requires more than developing affordable services. It also requires delivery architectures capable of reaching populations that conventional organizations may find expensive, geographically difficult, or institutionally complex to serve. Microfranchising provides one potential architecture by combining elements of standardized franchising with small-scale entrepreneurial ownership, relatively accessible entry requirements, local market knowledge, training, brand support, and repeatable service processes. This study develops a Microfranchise Inclusive Service Innovation Framework (MISIF) to examine how microfranchise systems can simultaneously expand entrepreneurial participation and improve last-mile service accessibility. The framework integrates six dimensions: franchise-entry accessibility, service standardization, franchisee capability development, local service adaptation, quality assurance, and community integration. Because no real microfranchise-network, franchisee-income, service-utilization, or customer dataset was provided, a transparent simulation-based explanatory design was adopted. Five synthetic microfranchise maturity scenarios ranging from 20% to 100% were evaluated. Mean simulated Inclusive Service Access Index values increase from 41.5 at 20% maturity to 86.4 at 100% maturity. Simultaneously, service-quality consistency rises from 50% to 91%, successful franchisee onboarding increases from 43% to 89%, locally generated service adaptations increase from 25% to 82%, and median time required to activate a new service outlet falls from 22 to 7 days. The analysis suggests that microfranchising creates inclusive-service value when replication and adaptation operate together. Excessive standardization can weaken local responsiveness, whereas excessive local discretion can undermine quality, brand credibility, and scalability. The paper contributes to microfranchising and inclusive-innovation research by conceptualizing the microfranchise as a service-innovation platform through which entrepreneurial opportunity, standardized operating capability, and locally embedded service delivery are jointly organized. All numerical findings are simulated and should be interpreted as theoretical scenario evidence rather than empirical estimates of actual microfranchise systems. |
