Frugal Digital Prototyping in Rural Entrepreneurial Ecosystems

| Abstract | Rural entrepreneurs frequently develop products and services under conditions of limited capital, geographically dispersed technical support, small local markets, infrastructure constraints, and restricted access to specialized prototyping facilities. Digital fabrication and low-cost design technologies can potentially reduce these disadvantages by allowing entrepreneurs to visualize, modify, manufacture, and test early solutions without immediately committing substantial financial resources to conventional product development. This study develops the concept of Frugal Digital Prototyping (FDP) as a resource-conscious entrepreneurial process that integrates accessible digital design tools, locally obtainable materials, modular product architecture, rapid iteration, community-based user feedback, and ecosystem-level technical support. The research adopts a simulation-based explanatory design because no real rural-enterprise prototyping dataset was supplied. A Frugal Digital Prototyping Maturity Index was developed across six dimensions: digital-tool accessibility, local material adaptability, modular design capability, rapid iteration capacity, user co-design, and ecosystem support. Five synthetic ecosystem scenarios ranging from 20% to 100% maturity were evaluated. The simulated prototype-development cost index declines from 100 to 39 across these conditions, while mean time to a first functional prototype falls from 16.8 to 5.0 days. Simulated incorporation of local-user feedback increases from 28% to 86%, and prototype-to-field-test conversion rises from 35% to 83%. A separate set of 120 simulated mature-system prototype cycles produces a mean iteration time of approximately 4.8 days. The findings indicate that frugal digital prototyping should not be interpreted as producing inferior low-cost artifacts. Its value lies in concentrating limited resources on core functionality, appropriate performance, repeated learning, and locally relevant design. The framework contributes to frugal-innovation, digital-entrepreneurship, maker, and rural-entrepreneurship research by explaining how digital prototyping capability can become a shared ecosystem resource rather than an expensive firm-specific asset. All numerical results are simulated and should not be interpreted as empirical estimates of actual rural ventures. |
