Cybersecurity Fatigue and Protective Behavior Among Remote Employees

Abstract Remote work has transformed organizational cybersecurity from a predominantly infrastructure-centered concern into a distributed behavioral challenge in which employees routinely make security decisions while managing deadlines, digital interruptions, domestic distractions, authentication requirements, security warnings, software updates, and multiple communication platforms. Repeated exposure to these demands may produce cybersecurity fatigue, a state characterized by mental weariness, frustration, reduced perceived control, and disengagement from security-related decisions. This study examines the relationship between cybersecurity fatigue and protective behavior among remote employees through a simulation-based analytical design.
The manuscript synthesizes established evidence on security fatigue, information-security stress, cybersecurity awareness, remote-work security, and employee security behavior and develops a reproducible synthetic dataset representing 240 hypothetical remote employees. The simulated analysis evaluates whether increasing cybersecurity fatigue is associated with deterioration in protective behaviors such as suspicious-message verification, secure authentication, policy adherence, use of approved access mechanisms, and timely security action.
The simulated results demonstrate a strong negative association between cybersecurity fatigue and protective behavior (r = -0.763), while a simple regression model explains approximately 58.3% of the simulated variance in protective behavior. Employees represented in the high-fatigue condition exhibit substantially weaker protective-behavior scores than those represented in low- and moderate-fatigue conditions. These results are illustrative rather than empirical population estimates, but they demonstrate a theoretically credible mechanism through which excessive security friction may undermine organizational protection. The paper argues that effective cybersecurity governance should reduce unnecessary cognitive burden rather than depend exclusively on additional warnings, mandatory training, and employee responsibility.
