Trust Signals in Online Scientific Communication During Public Controversies

| Abstract | Online scientific communication increasingly takes place in information environments marked by rapid circulation, fragmented attention, political contestation, algorithmic amplification, and competing claims to expertise. During public controversies involving health, climate, emerging technologies, environmental risk, and other science-related issues, audiences rarely evaluate scientific statements through evidence alone. They also depend on visible signals that indicate whether a source is competent, transparent, accountable, independent, and willing to acknowledge the limits of available knowledge. This study examines the role of such trust signals in shaping perceived trustworthiness in online scientific communication. Because no original field dataset was supplied, the investigation is explicitly structured as a simulation-based research study rather than a completed empirical survey.A synthetic sample of 2,400 audience responses was modeled across four communication conditions: minimal attribution, scientific-authority cue only, transparency bundle, and dialogic-accountability bundle. The transparency condition incorporated identifiable expertise, traceable evidence, uncertainty disclosure, and conflict-of-interest information, while the dialogic condition additionally incorporated correction visibility and opportunities for reasoned public response. Perceived trustworthiness was modeled on a five-point scale. Simulated mean trust scores increased from 3.02 under minimal attribution to 3.39 with an authority cue, 4.18 under the transparency bundle, and 4.43 under dialogic accountability. The pattern suggests that authority signals alone may be less robust than combinations of verifiability, openness, and accountability. This interpretation is consistent with recent evidence showing that scientific-authority cues can sometimes increase the perceived credibility and circulation of low-veracity content, while source credibility, uncertainty communication, media-literacy interventions, and transparent communication practices can support better information judgments.The study proposes that trustworthy scientific communication should move beyond status-based signaling toward evidence-linked, uncertainty-aware, correction-ready, and publicly accountable communication. The resulting framework offers a testable basis for future experiments using real audiences and controversial scientific topics. |
