Sustainable Packaging Decisions Across Consumer and Retail Ecosystems

| Abstract | Sustainable packaging has become a strategic concern for consumers, retailers, manufacturers, logistics providers, regulators, and waste-management systems. Packaging decisions are often simplified as a choice between conventional and environmentally preferable materials, although actual sustainability outcomes depend on a broader combination of product protection, consumer acceptance, retail feasibility, circularity, cost, disposal infrastructure, and behavioral participation. This study develops an integrated framework for evaluating packaging decisions across consumer and retail ecosystems. Because no original consumer or retailer dataset was provided, the quantitative component is explicitly designed as a simulation-based methodological analysis. Four hypothetical packaging strategies are compared: conventional single-use packaging, lightweight recyclable packaging, verified circular packaging, and an integrated consumer–retail ecosystem strategy. Five dimensions are considered: consumer acceptance, retailer operational feasibility, packaging functionality, circularity performance, and cost feasibility. The simulated composite decision score increases from 46 for conventional packaging to 64 for lightweight recyclable packaging, 78 for verified circular packaging, and 89 for the integrated ecosystem model. The findings suggest that sustainable packaging is most viable when environmental improvements are combined with product protection, clear information, convenient consumer participation, realistic retail operations, and functioning recovery systems. The paper contributes an Ecosystem Packaging Decision Model that can guide future empirical studies using consumer surveys, discrete-choice experiments, retailer data, life-cycle assessment, and observed reuse or recycling behavior. |
