Green Campus Transformation Through Student-Led Sustainability Innovation

Abstract Higher education institutions occupy a distinctive position in sustainability transitions because they simultaneously function as educational environments, research organizations, large operational systems, and communities capable of testing innovations under real-world conditions. Within this setting, students can contribute beyond participation in environmental awareness campaigns by functioning as designers, experimenters, project leaders, peer mobilizers, data collectors, and partners in institutional decision-making. This study examines how student-led sustainability innovation can contribute to green campus transformation through a structured integrative review of research on campus living laboratories, student change agency, sustainability governance, green operations, co-creation, and education for sustainable development. Research from Malaysian universities identifies students as important leaders, supporters, and ambassadors of campus sustainability, while evidence from Portuguese higher education demonstrates that green-campus initiatives and sustainability-oriented learning can positively influence student proactivity. Contemporary campus-living-lab research further shows that sustainable experimentation depends upon stakeholder networks, coordination, supportive organizational culture, leadership, collaboration, evaluation, and mechanisms for scaling successful solutions.
The study proposes a Student-Led Green Campus Transformation Framework comprising problem identification, co-design, campus experimentation, evidence-based evaluation, institutional adoption, and replication. The framework applies to renewable energy, resource efficiency, waste reduction, sustainable mobility, biodiversity, food systems, water management, behavioral change, and circular-economy initiatives. The study also emphasizes that student leadership should not be used as a substitute for institutional responsibility. Temporary projects may disappear when student leaders graduate unless universities provide continuity, governance authority, data access, mentorship, and long-term resources. Green campus transformation is therefore most effective when bottom-up student innovation and top-down institutional capability operate together, converting the campus into a living laboratory where sustainability is learned, tested, evaluated, and embedded in everyday university operations.
