Data-Informed Entrepreneurial Agility in Uncertain Consumer Markets

| Abstract | Consumer markets are increasingly characterized by rapid changes in preferences, shortened product cycles, fragmented digital channels, heightened competitive intensity, and uncertain demand patterns. Under these conditions, entrepreneurial firms cannot rely exclusively on historical experience or fixed planning assumptions. They require the capacity to detect emerging market signals, interpret them rapidly, test alternative responses, and reconfigure products, prices, communications, channels, and resource allocations before market opportunities disappear. This study examines data-informed entrepreneurial agility as an adaptive capability through which entrepreneurial ventures combine customer, transactional, digital, competitive, and experimental information with managerial judgment to respond to uncertain consumer markets. A structured integrative review and conceptual analytical design was used to synthesize contemporary research on big-data analytics capabilities, marketing agility, customer agility, dynamic capabilities, innovation, market turbulence, and entrepreneurial decision-making. Existing research provides strong support for the broader performance value of agility. A systematic review of 249 empirical studies published between 1998 and February 2024 found that 219 studies, or 87.9%, reported a positive relationship between forms of organizational agility and organizational outcomes; 27 reported mixed effects, two identified no significant relationship, and one reported a negative effect. Contemporary longitudinal evidence further indicates that data-driven innovation capability contributes to marketing agility and competitive advantage, while market turbulence influences the value of agile responses. Research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and Big Data similarly indicates that analytics can support opportunity identification, customer understanding, innovation, and dynamic strategic adaptation, although privacy, data quality, capability development, and overreliance on quantitative signals remain important constraints. The paper proposes a Data-Informed Entrepreneurial Agility Framework consisting of five connected processes: market sensing, evidence interpretation, opportunity prioritization, rapid experimentation, and adaptive reconfiguration. Data are treated as decision inputs rather than automatic decision makers; entrepreneurial judgment remains necessary for interpreting incomplete, noisy, and potentially backward-looking information. The study concludes that ventures operating in uncertain consumer markets can gain greater adaptive capacity when they combine reliable analytics with decentralized decision authority, short learning cycles, customer proximity, and disciplined experimentation. |
