Blockchain-Assisted Transparency in Community-Based Financial Ecosystems

| Abstract | Community-based financial ecosystems—including savings groups, credit cooperatives, microfinance networks, rotating savings associations, community investment schemes, peer-supported lending arrangements, and locally administered development funds—depend heavily on trust, record integrity, accountability, and the ability of members to understand how financial resources are collected, allocated, and repaid. Conventional record-keeping arrangements may become vulnerable when transaction information is fragmented across institutions, difficult for members to verify, or dependent on a single administrator. Blockchain and distributed-ledger technologies offer an alternative approach through tamper-evident records, shared verification, programmable transaction rules, and traceable financial flows. This paper investigates how blockchain can strengthen transparency in community-based financial ecosystems without assuming that maximum data visibility is desirable. A structured integrative review of scholarly and institutional literature was conducted with emphasis on blockchain finance, microcredit, distributed governance, auditability, smart contracts, financial inclusion, and privacy-preserving ledger design. The synthesis indicates that blockchain can improve transaction traceability, reduce ex-post alteration of records, strengthen audit trails, automate selected disbursement conditions, and create more credible financial histories for participants. Empirical research on blockchain-supported microcredit further suggests potential benefits in borrower profiling, contract automation, funding access, operational efficiency, and governance. Nevertheless, blockchain adoption introduces substantial challenges related to privacy, digital capability, key management, governance concentration, regulatory compliance, interoperability, erroneous data entry, smart-contract vulnerabilities, and the persistence of sensitive information. The proposed framework combines permissioned participation, tamper-evident transaction records, selective disclosure, accountable smart contracts, participatory oversight, off-chain protection of sensitive information, and accessible member-facing interfaces. The study concludes that blockchain contributes most effectively to community finance when technological transparency is deliberately balanced with privacy, inclusion, institutional responsibility, and human oversight. |
