Cognitive Overload and Decision Fatigue in Continuously Connected Workplaces

| Abstract | Continuously connected workplaces have substantially transformed contemporary professional life by enabling employees to communicate access information, collaborate with colleagues, and respond to organizational requirements through multiple digital platforms. Email, instant messaging, video-conferencing systems, project-management applications, and mobile technologies have increased workplace accessibility and responsiveness, but they have also created an environment in which employees may remain continuously exposed to information and communication demands. Persistent notifications, frequent messages, overlapping tasks, rapid information updates, and expectations of immediate availability can increase the amount of cognitive processing required during the working day. When employees must repeatedly evaluate, prioritize, and respond to incoming information while completing existing responsibilities, their available cognitive resources may become increasingly strained. This condition can contribute to cognitive overload, particularly when information volume exceeds the employee’s perceived capacity to process it effectively. The present study examines the relationship between cognitive overload and decision fatigue in continuously connected workplaces. A quantitative correlational research design is proposed to investigate how information volume, digital interruptions, communication frequency, task switching, and perceived availability demands are associated with employees’ decision-making experiences. The study focuses on digitally connected professional environments in which employees are required to manage multiple communication channels and workplace responsibilities simultaneously. The illustrative findings suggest that higher levels of cognitive overload may be associated with greater decision fatigue, reduced concentration, slower decision-making, mental exhaustion, and increasing difficulty maintaining consistent work performance. Persistent digital interruptions and excessive information exposure appear to represent important contributors to cognitive strain because they require employees to repeatedly shift attention and make small decisions throughout the working day. Over time, these accumulated demands may reduce the mental resources available for complex professional judgments and sustained concentration. The study therefore emphasizes that workplace connectivity should not be evaluated solely in terms of productivity, accessibility, or communication speed; its potential cognitive consequences should also receive organizational attention. |
