Immersive Simulation as a Bridge Between Conceptual Knowledge and Professional Practice

| Abstract | The persistent gap between conceptual knowledge and professional practice remains a significant challenge in higher education and professional training. Although students may develop strong theoretical understanding through lectures, readings, and classroom instruction, they can experience difficulty when required to transfer this knowledge to complex, uncertain, and practice-oriented situations. Immersive simulation offers a promising approach by creating realistic and interactive environments in which learners can apply theoretical concepts, make professional decisions, respond to changing conditions, evaluate consequences, and reflect on their actions. The present study examines immersive simulation as a bridge between conceptual knowledge and professional practice through a mixed-method research framework. The proposed framework combines quantitative assessment of learning outcomes with qualitative exploration of students’ experiences of immersion, decision-making, feedback, and reflection. Particular attention is given to conceptual knowledge application, professional decision-making, practical problem-solving, experiential engagement, reflective practice, and perceived professional readiness. The analysis suggests that structured simulation can provide learners with repeated opportunities to practice professional behaviours within controlled environments while reducing avoidable risks associated with real-world practice. By experiencing the consequences of their decisions, receiving structured feedback, reconsidering unsuccessful approaches, and applying alternative strategies, students can develop a more contextual and practical understanding of professional knowledge. However, the effectiveness of immersive simulation depends on realistic scenario design, appropriate instructional guidance, meaningful feedback, reflective activities, and alignment with authentic professional requirements. The study concludes that immersive simulation can strengthen the transition from theoretical understanding to professional competence by transforming conceptual knowledge into active, contextual, and experience-based learning. The findings offer useful implications for educators and professional training institutions seeking to improve practice-oriented learning, decision-making skills, reflective capacity, and students’ readiness for complex professional environments. |
